Being More Productive, Less Stressed and Happier at Work

Many of my coaching clients are high achievers who tend to get caught up in their work and forget to take time to breathe – let alone have some fun.  Here are some tips to help you be more productive, less stressed and happier at work.

  1. Start the day off right.  Do something you enjoy.  Take a walk. Read the paper.  Drink a latte.  Do whatever helps you get the day off to a great start.
     
  2. Develop a schedule or routine that works for you.  For example, I exercise Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings before I go to work.  I schedule my coaching calls and tele-forums Tuesday - Thursday and keep Monday and Friday open for office work, marketing activities, on-site meetings and workshops -- and for time to just have fun! 
     
  3. Set daily work goals with activities and real deadlines that have consequences if you don’t meet them. 
     
  4. Make appointments with yourself (and keep them!) to tackle things like filing, doing taxes, making marketing calls, etc. For example, this week I’ve scheduled a two-hour block of time to organize my office – something I keep putting off.  Once I actually schedule it and treat it like a business appointment, I know I’ll do it.
     
  5. Get a friend, colleague or coach to keep you focused and on track.
     
  6. If you are unhappy with an aspect of your job, determine a way to change it and make it better.
     
  7. Stop the interruptions. If you often get interrupted at work, talk to your staff (or family members, if you work at home) about it. If you have a door, close it -- or even lock it, if necessary!  Also, rather than answering phone calls and emails as they come in, answer them at scheduled times during the day.
     
  8. Make your office space a place that appeals to you, motivates you, and makes you smile.
     
  9. Each day, before you leave work, make sure you’ve scheduled something interesting, entertaining or exciting to do at work the next day.
     
  10. Make some time for things that aren’t work-related and have some fun!  It is important to get completely away from work. Schedule appointments with yourself to read a good book, go to a movie, play some tennis, visit with friends or family – anything you truly enjoy.
